Fifteen-year-old Mitchell Lavender and his mom plan a trip to the Everglades, but fate has other ideas. Mitchell flies into Miami with sixteen-year-old Mateo, a rodeo friend. They stay with a man they've never met, and who abandons them.

A chance meeting, some ingenuity, and bad luck leaves them stranded in the Everglades for days, catching dinner and cooking it over a fire, watching a python eat a baby pig, and bathing in alligator infested waters, among other more terrifying misfortunes.
